does it matter in real world gaming performance?

Not at the moment.
I think Anandtech or Tomshardware did a write up on the matter.


Having said that, if I were to buy a new motherboard today it would have to be PCIe 3.0 spec

The Anandtech article said that you need at least 8x PCI-E 3.0 or 16x PCI-E 2.1 to feed a single 7970.

Otherwise there was some bottlenecking if you gave the card less then that.

Currently, no difference until you rock a 7950 CF or 7970 CF at the bare minimum. Onwards of 7950 Tri Fire the difference may be somewhat noticeable, at least in theoritical FPS.
