I just purchased an ASUS P4P800-E Deluxe motherboard from NewEgg. We were putting it together today, (OK, truth be told, he was putting it together) & everything was going fine until I went to log on. XP isn't seeing the modem because he can't find the driver for the PCI Communications Controller on the disk that came with the motherboard. We went to ASUS.com on his computer but the servers were down.

If anyone could please tell us how to either find the controller on the disk or where to get it from the internet, we would be most grateful. We are rather stuck at the moment & can't go any farther without resolving this issue.

Everything loaded great to this point, that is, XP & the utilities from the ASUS disk.

Thank you!

It's looking for your modem driver, not a driver for the motherboard. What brand and model of modem is it, I'll help you track it down (or if you have the modem's driver CD there, it should be on there).

By the way, before connecting a "raw" WinXP installation to the ISP by dialing up, it would be a very smart idea to either enable WinXP's firewall or install free ZoneAlarm firewall software (or another firewall software). Don't want your fresh WinXP installation immediately getting taken out by worms... :(

Dear Mechbgone (sp?)

He felt so stupid when I read what you wrote, "of course that's what it is looking for," he said. It is an Intel 536EP modem.

Thank you so much for your help!!!

That's good news, enjoy your new rig  "mechBgon" is spelled that way on purpose, btw :)

While I'm at it... if you click the bottom link in my signature below and go to the Resources page, there are some links and suggestions for securing the new system. If you have broadband, then downloading the whole Service Pack 2 installer for him might be a real timesaver, for example (there's a link to it). Even if you won't be using password-based log-on, it would be smart to also use strong passwords on all user accounts to secure them from attack against worms and Trojans, too.
