I have a new system that I built from a bare-bones kit. It has a Soyo KT-133 Dragon Platinum motherboard in a case that also came from Soyo. I have a 350W powersupply from sparkle power and 512MB of memory from Crucial
My problem is that I have apparently had two PCI network cards die on me. The first one died after a few days, so I bought a replacement and it died in a few minutes. By "dying" I mean that the green lights go out and the card is no longer recognized by the OS. The first card was w3orking fine in another computer before I moved it to my new system. After the failure, this card will no longer work in the old system either.
I am concerned that there is a problem on the PCI bus that is damaging these cards. Although my expensive video card, a GForce4 from Asus, is working OK, so it can't be a disastrous problem. I am thinking a motherboard problem or a power supply problem. I used a volt meter to check that I really have 5V from the power supply, but that doesn't check for AC irregularities.
I'd like to know if anyone else has seen this problem or if anyone has an idea on how to further diagnose it. I don't want to keep buying network cards!
