PCI Bus Speed Problem?

I've been going through various things trying to figure why I'm getting some relatively constant momentary freezing during game play. I noticed while doing this that the catalyst control panel showing my 7970 at only x4 bus setting.

I installed gpuz for the first time and it is showing x1 at idle and x4 at load. This is the only card installed on a machine with a 2600k and giga z6x-ud3h board.

On my way out this morning I checked my office machine that has a nvidia card (not sure where to find bus setting in the nvidia control panel) and cpuid shows x16 bus use. Will check it when I get home with gpuz.

I'd my gpu really running at such a low bus speed? How can I fix this if a problem?

Are you using any other PCIe slots?

And, try turning this off:

found that setting, it was at max ower but turned it off with no changed. Loaded up a stress test/benchmark program and even though everything still reporting that the x16 bus only running at x4, score wise it seems inline with other reported values. Only thing I can think of is the board throttling based on need unless someone has better knowledge.

Which slot do you have the card installed in?

At any rate, you're not likely bandwidth limited. It shouldnt have much of an effect.

The above graph is from http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/Intel/Ivy_Bridge_PCI-Express_Scaling/23.html
It is a summary result of several tests. You're only losing 5% vs x16. Unfortunately I could not find an "frame time" data for x4.

How long are these freezes? I know it is difficult to guess accurately down to the nearest say 50 mS, but the more accurate you can estimate, the better.

I traced the game issue to another program, so I was really just trying to figure out if there was some other unrelated problem with my board or card. Its in the x16 slot, cpuz reports it as a x16 capable slot, cpuz reports the card as x16 capable, cpuz and gpuz report it as operating at x4.
