PCI 56K modem

heya all ..

just wondering which Linux works instantly with PCI 56k MODEMS right out of the box (without having to monkey around) ?

I've been monkeying around with wvdal and KPPP to no avail. Sadly.. I've wasted so much time already so I wonder if you guys have had any luck with PCI 56K MODEMS.

If to monkey-around is needed, what steps have you done to achieve this ? and which Linux distro ?

I'm trying to get my sister's PC to run linux with PCI 56K modem.

I can't help as far as a distro, but there are modems which just don't work well as they are WinModems and offload the real work to the OS. There are modems out there which do all of the work on chip, and these work much better with Linux. I am sure someone can suggest one.

PS - this is not to say you can't get a WinModem to work in Linux, its just a lot more work.

PCI modem have a tendency to basically consist of a piece of cardboard with a RJ11 connector glued to it.
I think it will be much easier if you went and bought a standard stand-alone modem instead. They are not expensive anymore.

If the modem is so-called "Host based" or a "Winmodem" you are basically ought of luck. If you get a proper hardware modem(easier with external modems; but not impossible in PCI models) Linux will just work. Odds are, though, that if you don't know, you have a winmodem. The modem market sucks like that.

IMO, your cheapest bet is going to be to look on eBay for 56k (v90 are easy to find) serial port modems. You should be able to find a decent one for $20 or so shipped, if not less (maybe lacking a cable, though).

hello guys 🙂 thank you for all your help 🙂 when I get some extra time this thursday, I'll monkey-around more on these. I have a handful of PCI modems of different brands ( intel, rockwell, etc) and ONE external serial modem.

I wonder what dial-programs are out there (wvdial, gnome ppp, etc) have a better success ?
