I need to be able to connect to clients (DHCP) thru a server (static IP) with PCAnywhere.
I know it can be done, because I have seen a tech do it! I know that I do not have to forward ports, etc...like I say, I have seen an outside tech get into the same machines.
I can get to the server, but do not know how to get to the clients to control them.
The server and clients are all running PCAnywhere, and are all attached to the same router.
I am new to PCAnywhere, and I just don't have time to figure it out!
The server is running 2000 server, BTW.

Thanx,
Ron

What version of PC Anywhere are you running for starters? You can have PC Anywhere look for clients to connect to by leaving the address blank in the remote section for the hosts ip address and it will do a ping sweep for clients that will respond to port 5631 and 5632. I have verified this on versions 10.5 and 11. This might generate a little traffic on the network but it should be minimal, you should then see a list of waiting hosts. Hope it helps... :D

My version is 10.5.2
I am not sure I follow your instructions.
Can you post a screen shot?
Thanx,

Here is the section I was talking about.. just leave it blank and you should get a screen dialog looking for hosts. You will get this by right clicking on the Network, DSL, Cable remote item and choosing properties.
Good luck.

I am not at the server terminal, I am in my office, away from the establishment altogether.
I need to connect thru the internet to the server, and then the clients.
Does that make sense?
Thanx for your help so far!

Ok, If you log into the server using PCanywhere from your office you will get the servers desktop, open the PCanywhere main program (on the server not your workstation), then choose remotes - Lan Cable DSL and leave it blank like in the screenshot. You will be running the program inside YOUR session and you should now see a choice of machines. You are almost there.

hehehe, I swear that is the first thing I tried and got a message that said something about having to log off of the original connection before I could launch another one.
But, I tried again, and,,,, Yer Right!
Thanx much for your help.

OK, now I need to get a direct connection from the outside into one of the clients.
I configured it with the same IP as whne we connect to the server, and then I changed the ports (in the details section) to 5634 and 5635.
I forwarded ports 5634 and 5635 to the internal IP of the client, but it will not connect.
I tried other ports with the server also, and cannot get a connect with anything other than 5631 and 5632.
The STRANGE thing is, I can disable 5631 and 5632 to the server but I still get connected to it!
Thanx!

OK, I figured out the settings to get it to work with another port, but I still do not understand why when I disabled 5631 and 5632 I could still connect to the server...?...

Ron,

Can you provide a little more detail of your network setup? Were you going thru a router and port forwarding? or were you giving the client an outside address for the connection? It does seem weird that you would still be able to connect to the server after you changed the ports that it was listening on. I think a little more information is necessary to diagnose this properly.
