Will PC3200 work with the socket 939 AMD processors? I just wanna know before I buy another 512MB stick, I don't wanna get something I can't use later on.

Yup PC3200 should be the memory standard for socket 939 until 2006 since AMD is highly against DDR2 as it stands right now. Of course you could always get higher speed ram if you plan on reusing it so you could run 1:1 if you will overclock then. Of course if you are looking that far in advance, nothing is a sure bet.

Yes. Given the additional latency of DDR-II, and it offering no real benefit over DDR until mainstream DDR-II 800 is out, AMD is happy sitting on DDR. I doubt they'll be able to hold off until '06, but mid-'05 for sure.

So if I got another stick of Corsair 512MB pc3200 for my rig now (just because I want matching sticks for dual channel) I could use both of those again for a future Athlon 64?

probably have ddr2 and ddr slots side by side on some boards later on... no?

Sounds good enough for me, I just want to be able to upgrade some stuff now, to sue later, and save as much money as possible.

Well, If you want to overclock the suckers to a 270 HTT like Anand did, PC3500 or more I think would be more profitable. But the real answer to your question is yes and then some. For instance, I ran 220x (440 Mhz) With PC3200 which is rated for 400 Mhz. Just buy it from a well known brand and your set.

OK, So I think i'm finally at "that point" I'm gonna get a matching stick of 512MB from newegg tommorow, along with some ceramique, sound good!? :) Is 1GB a smart move if I intend to just upgrade my CPU/mobo later?

if you are going to get anything amd64, go for it. The lower latency the better becuase AMD is latency sensitive more than bandwidth sensitive. Plus AMD won't go DDR2 until late next year probably at DDR2 800 speeds so you should be safe for an upgrade or two motherboard (feature) wise and 1gig is a nice minimum for gaming, windows resource hogging etc.

No. With AMD's on-die memory controller, they're going to want to stick with 1 memory standard, since it's going to mean switching sockets whenever there's a major standard swtich. Since "transitional" stuff like 2 types of memory would take a new socket, I don't believe we'll see it.

But in general, do you guys think $82 for a stick of 512 is a good investment (In addition to my 512 now)

SneakyStuff:

Depends on the name brand.

If it's Kingston/corsair/etc value series, sure.

If it's something like CompUSA ValueBrand! then probably not.

if you are going dual channel 939, remember it is dual channel which means it requires two dimms to work. two different 3200 sticks (i.e. one stick corsair cas2 etc and another crucial cas3 etc) may or may not cause problems and raise your cas and latency which you do not want on any AMD64 system. You have to get the other 512 for dual channel. If you have 2 256meg modules than it gets trickier becuase you should buy 2 512 modules or keep the 2 2 256meg modules

Whats the brand of the RAM you getting (timings, did you check oveclocking reviews?, etc.)

I got Geil PC3500 256 mb for $60 last year in June and it was the cheapest "fastest" memory for a reasonable price back then (I remember Corsair PC3200 was like $72). So I guess I was also buying during the time of high RAM prices hehe....so to me $82 for 512 is cheap.

I think this statement is incorrect. Because of the on-die memory controller, latency DOESN'T mean as much to the AMD64.

Well, I'm gonna match the prospective stick, to the one I have now, which is a Corsair 512MB pc3200. With the cas latency of 2.5. I've got a stick of it in there now, it's been overclocked to like 230 when I was messin with overclocking, but it's just running at 166 MHz now b/c of my 333 MHz fsb, and will prolly continue to do so til I get a PCI-E board with an Athlon 64.
