3200 cost nearly the same as a 2700 stick, *nearly (very)
here's my scenario:
I put a Corsair 256mb DDR400 stick into my Dell Dimension 2400 mobo, which suggests it takes only 2700 - didn't start up
I put a Rosewill 512mb DDR400 stick into my Dell Dimension 2400 mobo - started up
-=-=-
-My system memory runs at DDR200 on my VIA Southbridge when I place both sticks into the mobo.
-I switch the sticks around, now it's detecting DDR333
-=-=-
My former mobo with an SIS Southbridge took both sticks at DDR400

It's not guaranteed, to hell with these memory controllers, you just can't trust them.
Edit: I think JEDEC is too dam* slow to understand that the PC market is advancing quickly, and their implementations can't even get two things right, memory controllers and DDR3.
