PC3200 vs PC4000

Ok, I don't know much about RAM yet as I have just began to research it in-depth. I'm not sure what the "timings" mean, but I know that lower is better. My question is, which is better: 3200 memory with the lowest timings or 4000 with slightly higher timings. I plan to overclock my future 3200 and it's RAM for all its got. I'm thinking that the PC4000 should overclock easier because it is made to run at DDR500, but I'm not really sure, is this a misconception?

These caught my eye, although I haven't looked extensively yet and I am open to suggestions. (new budget ~$225)

The PC4000 seems closer to my budget, but I'm guessing there's a reason it's cheaper.

First of all, you should clarify which CPU you will choose--A64 or P4. I believe that would make quite large difference in your choice.

read the post at the top labled Official 939 Memory Matrix. There isn't much of a real difference between chips so save some money and just get decent value ram 3200. You can still oc all you want you just use a memory divider.

Sorry, I always forget stuff like that. I plan on getting getting the A64 3200 Winchester. I guess I assumed too much that people would know what I meant when I said "...my future 3200 and it's RAM for all...". Sorry again.

pc4000 is only worth it if you overclock. at stock speeds, pc3200 is the standard. if you want a higher bus speed then 200mhz, that's when the need for faster memory comes in.

Auch! I feel stupid :( I thought that's another 3200 for PC3200.

Well, anyway, I think every module you linked above will be more than enough, since for A64, both timing and async is not a huge part of performance, even with massive OC. (Refer to the sticked post) So if I had to choose one of the modules linked, I'd choose PQI PC4000, because it's the cheapest.

But I will consider anything with TCCD in first place though.

Well to OC a DDR400 ram you'd probably have to up the timings anyway. I got DDR500 ram mainly because I don't wanna be playing with too many voltages when I OC, I think screwing around with the voltages on my CPU is enough hassle. Just run the ram at whatever 200mhz, 233mhz, 250mhz, whatever you need to and you won't have to mess with timings or voltages at all. And you can make sure your ram reaches those speeds, they were designed to. I got a gig of OCZ Gold DDR500 for like 250.

DDR500 ram will run max stock at 250mhz, giving you an OC of 2.5ghz on your 3200+. That's already a nice healthy OC, so unless you wanna go to like 2.7 you really don't need to OC your ram.

Then get the higher speed RAM, the PC4000 will take you as far as your Winchester will go.
