PC3200 Memory - Which is the best?

I need one gig of pc3200 DDR for my new system, but I don't know which module is the best for the money. I'd like to spend < $220 on the ram, and still get aggressive timings like 2-2-2-6. I've looked at the Corsair TwinX but they go for around $300, and that is just too damn pricey. A week ago, newegg had the kingston hyperX, and those were $109 for each 512MB module. They had 2-2-2-6 timings, but all of a sudden when im ready to buy my system, i cant find these on newegg! And worse yet, it seems that the price has been raised everywhere else to 130 per module. That takes me right out of the target price point.

So, aside from these two modules, what other reliable options do i have? Keep in mind im getting an 865 board, and the chipset *supposedly* doesnt really care about mem timings, so I'm not even sure i need such aggressive ram.

Also, I'm seeing the kingston hyperx 3500 modules actually cheaper than the 3200 modules! Now the timings on these are 2-3-3-7, but wouldnt these run fine at 3200 2-2-2-6?

yeah i know, thats why i put the smile. It just doesn't look like a good place 😀

Yeah Corsair XMS 3200 just jumped in price about $20 per stick about a week and a half ago. I think Kingston Hyper X might have followed suit.

Okay After some searching, i found Kingston HyperX 512MB 3200 for $109. Anyone know about Xtreme Gear? Whether they are reliable or not? Because everywhere else is selling these for $130+, i've got an itchy clicking finger. This is the ram i want, and buying 2 sticks here could potentially save me $40-45 dollars.

What do you guys think?

And keep the memory suggestions coming, I need to keep my options open!

I've bought a few times from them, great service. Micron is the same price, thats what I got. I just can't see spending twice as much for .1 percent better performance.

Ok that website looks like a scam waiting to happen 😀

That RAM isn't actually PC3200 either - PC3000 running at PC3200 speeds.
I'm using 2 sticks of this, running in Dual Channel mode at 205MHz. I'll probably try a bit higher in time. This is on an Epox 8RDA+ rev1.1.

On 865 Boards, Corsair can be a bear. 512 mb PC3200LL modules need to be run with a 3 of CAS to RAS. Corsair actually recommends PC3500 or their new TwinX PC3700 . For the time being, it looks like their marketing has backed off from claiming such low timings and people are encouraged to try lowering the timings themselves. http://www.corsairmicro.com/xms/buyers_guide_jun-2003b.pdf

Now, HyperX and others are at more relaxed timings than the corsair XMS LL modules . In any event, I'd pick HyperX PC3500 if I had it to do over again.

<=== P4P800 Deluxe and 512 mb XMS PC3200LL module owner who isn't pleased with the weeks of playing with SPDs to know what works (2-2-3-5-8bank-default voltage-MAM enabled-Perf Mode at Auto - 1.007 bios)... the motherboard says supports PC3200, you'd think that'd be the thing to buy but noooo...

BuyXtremegear.com isn't that great a site. IMHO, memory prices at newegg and googlegear are competitive and they have a reputation.

It seems that im gonna go for the kingston hyperX 3500 modules. the timings are 2-3-3-7, but if i run them at 3200 speeds in an 865 board, do you think i can get more aggressive timings (like 2-2-2-6)?

Believe it or not, the kingston 3500 modules are cheaper than the 3200 modules right now.

I'd expect so, but haven't had much personal experience with the HyperX modules, just know their reputation as a "cheaper version of corsair" for high performance memory.

Yup, that site sells OC'ed memory unless you choose the highest option, which then you might as well buy from newegg.com
