PC2700 RAM compatability issue

I recently bought an MSI mobo with the VIA KT333 chipset. To go with, I bought 256 megs of PC2700 ram. when I first booted the system, it hung at boot and the little diagnostic LED said that it was because of the ram. I put a 512 meg stick of PC2100 ram in and the computer booted fine, but then it kept page faulting randomnly and I couldnt even get the OS to install. I tried another stick of PC2100 ram and it booted, but kept page faulting. what is going on here? is pc2700 ram supported by the VIA KT333? is my motherboard broken? am I retarded?
thanks.

The KT333 chipset does support PC2700. What brand of PC2700 do you have there, and what brand are the other sticks you used? Are they near the specified 2.5 volts when you look in the BIOS?

Other possible issues:
  • a skimpy power supply
  • a power supply with plenty of power, all of it badly regulated!
  • an overheating CPU
  • bad motherboard
  • incorrect CPU voltage

Some of those are not very likely but you can check them out as necessary. Good luck with the bug hunt!
