PC2700 or PC3200?

I'll be picking up a Asus P4S8X soon and was wondering if I should spring for the PC3200 DDR RAM? Will there be any problem running DDR400 at 333 if the board doesn't support DDR400? Or should I just buy PC2700?

Thanks for the help!

No, there shouldn't be any problem in underclocking the ram. Would prolly be able to run with lower cas-setting than at ddr400 too.

Another option would eb to go with good pc2700 ram like Samsung and then oc it to ddr400 levels if you feel like it; I run my Samsung ddr333 @ ddr413 although at the lowest possible cas-setting on my mobo (P4B533-E)

Which one is faster?

Samsung PC2700 DDR333 @ CAS2 or Samsung PC3200 DDR400 @ CAS3 if you don't overclock niether of them? I have the CTL version of PC2700 DDR333, but I never overclock anything, so... :)

Just wondering which one would run faster at stock speed. The PC3200 DDR400 costs like $30 more...

Hmmm

Well, my DTL runs fine at 2.5/3/3/7 at 413 and is faster than at stock 166Mhz 2/3/3/5. That's the reason I got it originally, you couldn't get cas2 ddr400 then and my mobo doesn't support it anyway so the Samsung would be just as good as it can oc a lot.

Ur memo is a very good overclocker. I heard that Samsung put this same chips of the PC2700 CTL on the PC3200 memos. Since this PC2700 hits 209 Mhz @ CAS 2.
The CTL is a little bit better than the DTL.

Could someone explain the CAS settings? I know nothing about this and don't know what to look for.

Ur memory works in cycles, those CAS, RAS, Precharge Timing, etc make the cycles smaller. So it means that it will work faster.
I know someone will a little bit better than me. But its a brief explanation.
Probabaly U can find on the net articles explaning how it works, best settings for it.
But in ur memos probably U can set all to lowest settings.

Good luck!

According to the recent OCWORKBENCH P4S8X REVIEW, the board is not stable at DDR400 using PC3200, but it ran great at DDR333 with PC2700. Note that they tested it with just 2 sticks, so there's no assurance yet that running with 3 sticks of PC2700 at DDR333 will be stable either.
