After installign my new processor and having my power supply blow up today, i've finally got the results that i paid for. I get 60-130 fps on most of source. Still, i get slowdown about 10 fps once i start shooting; if theres a large fire fight, can drop 20 fps in an instant. I have a gig of pc266... could this slow combination account for my slow downs?

What is the rest of your system?

The ram could be the cause of the issues ... during those fights and when you start shooting the animations for the shooting have to be loaded off of the ram.

3.0E at 3.45 (41 idle, 55-57 load with copper sink)
1 gig pc266
geforce 6800
asus p4p800x

When i bought the gig of ram a month ago, it was for my old motherboard and processor(2 ghz). Listened to some people on IRC and they told me pc400 wouldn't be compatible with my old intel motherboard.. which was true in a sense as they wouldnt run full speed. Now after buying a new motherboard, processor, and pretty much replacing everything... got to spend another 100 dollars on ANOTHER gig of ram.. making this batch useless... ah well, guess i can start saving again.

You could try running the ram out of spec, see if it causes stabillity problems.
I've got a 512mb stick of PC2700 that handles 400mhz just fine even though it's not rated to.
If it doesn't work, then buy new ram and sell your old ram. The price difference should not be too big hopefully.

To run at its full potential, a P4 3.4Ghz NEEDS dual channel PC3200 or DDR2 400/533 to keep its 800MHz Front Side Bus properly fed. Your PC2100 RAM is starving that poor processor, and you are losing performance. P4s suck at gaming even in the best of circumstances, and you are just tying on hand behind its back by using that slow RAM.
