I'm looking at getting a K266A board, preferrably the Shuttle AK35GTR.

What I need to know is:

whats the difference between 2100 and 2700 DDR RAM.

What performance benefits, if any, will I get with 2700?

Will PC2700 run on the Shuttle AK35GTR?

I've looked and can't find a recent RAM article.

Thanks.

Since all new Athlon T-Bird and XP processors run at 133x2 FSB (266 DDR) the RAM they require is PC2100 which is DDR 266.
the PC2700 will only be beneficial in overclocking as it is meant to run at 166x2 (333 DDR)

the 2700 will work on the AK35GTR, and the only benefit you will see is if you are heavily overclocking... most 2700 is hand picked 2100 unless it's true 333 (which is expensive) so you might as well get a quality stick of PC2100 and run it at higher speeds, because it most likely will, without problems..

If you are not planning on overclocking, then you won't see any benefit at all, the PC will run the same way as with 2100 in it.
the only time you need the 2700 is if you are going to be using a 333 MHz chipset like on the Iwill XP333 which is meant to run at 166, other than that, 2700 is too much extra money, not justified.

with that board? nothing really. It really doesn't overclocked well, if you went with the epox, then you might get more out of it.

To make it really simple, the pc2700 ram is rated to run at a faster speed than pc2100. However, if you don't "overclock" your ddr 266 board, then pc2100 will do just fine. In fact, most pc2100 RAM can run faster than their rated speed, so you could even dabble in a little oc'ing, if you wanted to. However, if you're going to buy a ddr 333 board, then you'll want the pc2700.

So, pc2700 and pc2100 ram can run on a pc1600 motherboard? Is this like 133/100/66 'compatability' w/ SDRAM? Hard to find the slow sticks cheap.
