PC2100 vs. PC2700 DDR

Well after a successful trade, I've wound up with a nice P4 motherboard. No 533FSB, no Hyperthreading, but a nice DDR board all the same. I plan on sticking either my wife's P4 1.5 (I don't know if it's NW or Willie) or a new Celeron 1.7 cheapie. I'm going to have to buy the processor one way or the other because I can't leave my wife's Dell empty.

If I get the Celeron, I might "make and attempt" at overclocking it...... Maybe.
(Sheesh, what's with the word blocking filter, mods? I wasn't typing anything naughty!)

So, is PC2100 enough? Would PC2700 make a noticable difference? Only when overclocking?

PC2700 offers more room to tweak out.

If you get a celery be sure to get a 2ghz + because those are northwoods,the slower ones are willies & dont oc that great.

And since celerons are 100 fsb & overclocking it will take you to 133fsb at best I think you should be fine for now with PC2100 ram.

With no 533fsb, 2100 would be fine. just think of it like pc100 ram and pc133.

Sounds good... and no wonder a Cel2.0 costs 50% more. Mind you, a Cel2.0 at at LEAST 2.5GHz will outperform this P4 1.5 under every circumstance.

And glad to hear on PC2100.

Assuming you're running your memory synchronous with the FSB, and your mobo doesn't support 533fsb (133 actual), then your PC2700 would just run at PC2100 speeds anyway. So no, there would be no visible difference at all.

You wont notice any difference from pc2100 and pc2700 unless your overclocking. Its like noticing a difference between 200FPS and 300FPS.

Well, the goal now is to take a Celeron 2.0 as far as this board will allow... probably only 2.5

PC2100 is more than enough.
when only running at such a low frequency even PC1600 is running right in spec.
PC2100 is meant to run around 133 and PC1600 is like 100. the P4's FSB is like 4X100 so PC1600 would be fine. PC2100 is more than enough, you can likely overclock as much as you can get out of that P4 1.5 before the memory craps out.

Yeah, but how about when overclocking a Celly 2.0 to at least 2.5?

IIRC, I think you can bump the Cel 2Ghz to 3Ghz.

If it's a 100fsb board only you'll be lucky if you reach 133 stable.

I dont think you'll reach 150mhz with that board, 20X150 = 3ghz

20x133 is a more resonable thing to hope for.
