PC2100 running at PC2700??

how possible is it to run PC2100 RAM at 166 mhz??

i have heard conflicting stories about this.

do you need top quality PC2100 to run it at 16 mhz stabily??
or is it very common (on any RAM)??

some will run at 166/DDR333.
I had 2 sticks of 256mb Crucial stuff, mt chips, CL2.5.
I ran it at 166/DDR333 with 2.7v at 2.5-3-3
I just got some Mushkin DDR266..its been running since last night at DDR400

I'm also running PC2100 DDR266 @ DDR333 (PC2700).
My memory is even not a brand one. (I bought it from Ebay)
What I did is just adding 0.2V on Vdimm (2.7V)
Hope you to reach PC2700.

so i can save some bucks by getting some PC2100 & running it close to PC2700??

i want to get a VIA KT333 chipset board for my upgrade to DDR RAM you see.

anyone heard of these taiwan makers. Vdata, Apacer, M-tec ??

I'm running Crucial PC 2100 memory @ 166 MHz with the fastest settings: 2-2-2-5-7 ... I have not increased the voltage whatsoever. However, your results may vary. I doubt generic PC2100 memory will run rock stable at PC2700 speeds with the fastest settings and everything, but with voltage tweaking and pretty good cooling it might.

I had Crucial PC2100 running at 166 no problem with fastest timings, but that was about it - fsb had to stay at 133 if I ran aysnchronous. Now, using Samsung PC2700 I can run at 150MHz fsb asynchronous with CPU:Memory ratio 4:5, CPU-Z reports that the RAM is at 187.5 MHz, still using fastest timings.

do u have Samsung PC2700 or Kingsmax?

according to the link posted by Boonesmi the Crucial PC2100 can reach the same numbers as the Kingmax PC2700

but probably costs the same anyway.
my supplier hasnt listed Crucial, but got the Kingmax, in fact the only 166mhz ddr ram there
they even have PC3200 RAM there too

Actually, the clue was in my phrase "Using Samsung PC2700" - I actually did try Kingmax as well, I found that it wasn't as stable as the Crucial PC2100. In fact, it seems like quite a few people have had problems with this MB/RAM combination, that's why I went for Samsung.

been to crucials site , not bad prices, but when converted to AU dollars plau shipping, a little too rich for me.

well including postage and all PC2100 crucial 256meg works out to be the same price i can get Kingmax PC2700 here

so 6 one way & half a dozen the other way i guess


hows Samsung in the price range??

plus also a side note, hows the KT333 chipset going ?? rocks????

Just to give you an idea of prices here in UK:-

256MB Crucial PC2100 £70
256MB Crucial PC2700 £96
256MB Kingmax PC2700 £85
256MB Samsung PC2700 £87 (Samsung PCB)
256MB Samsung PC2700 £73 (3rd party PCB)
256MB Corsair XMS2700 £94
256MB Kingmax PC3200 £112 (!)

So if you can get Samsung for similar sort of price, it's worth going for it - especially paying the extra for Samsung-manufactured PCBs.

hmmm that Crucial 2100 would be a good buy then.
i went to the Samsung site. i emailed them about semi conductor dealers in my area.

fingers crossed.

may have to settle for the kingmax 2700, cant be overclocked much , but starts at a good rate anyway

or maybe get some generic 2100 so as to lower the coast of my upgrade (MoBo too)
& then look into better RAM when i got the cash
