My father has a Dell 4550 sytem and he wants to max out the memory to 1gb. The computer uses PC2100 but there is a 256mb 2700 module in one of the slots?? I guess PC2700 works fine in that sytem?? Would it downclock from 333 to 266?? The memory i'm looking at is Mushkin(Green) 1Gb PC2700 on NewEgg for $97........Thanks

You could even throw PC3200 in there, it's all about the same price now.

PC3200 is probably even cheaper than PC2100/2700. I'd go with that, as it will work fine, and in the future, you'll be able to stick it in another system and run it at 400mhz if you want.

yeah go with some pc3200 value ram, so if/when you upgrade you can keep the ram, and it will probably not be anymore expensive

If you add a gigabyte of PC2700 RAM, but it's running at PC2100 because you have a slow DIMM in another slot, be sure to pull the old memory from the system. 1 GB DDR333 RAM will yield better performance than 1.5 GB DDR266. You can sell the PC2100 stick on Ebay.

EDIT: Make sure that your motherboard & CPU are both capable of running DDR333 memory.
