I currently have 2 gigs of crucial ballistix pc2 8000 ram (ddr2 1000). I am using vista 64 bit and want to upgrade to 4 gigs of ram, but I can't find the exact same ram for sale any more. The closest item is the crucial ballistix pc2 8500 (ddr2 1066). Is this a close enough match that I can use it and still overclock without issue? Or do these two products use different ram chips or would otherwise be incompatible?

its fine- but you'll be limited by your current ram. If you weren't overclocking, the board should set all the ram to the highest shared speed and latency- probably 1000mhz/cas5. If you are overclocking , you won't be subject to that...
If you want matching speed (1000mhz), just buy it from another brand- you don't have to use the same brand (although voltage-wise it may be best in a few cases)

u can always sell your current stuff and get certified dual channel kits.

I think you'll be fine. voltages are the thing you need to look at and CAS standards if you're gettin' generic RAM.

visit the manufa. website and get all the info you need compare them on charts and if you don't like what you see, hit up a 4 gig dual channel kit.

OC'ing is basically sayin' you're goin' out of your way for the best parts or good enough parts to get faster speeds. so unless you're on a budget and don't wanna refund or resell, then do it right the first time around.
