PC2-4200 AND PC2-3200 in the same box ok?

I have a Dell 8400. Is it ok to have the two different speeds of RAM in the same box as long as I keep the same speeds 'paired' up?

Also which would be faster ... a 2 Gig system with the above 4 chips utilizing all 4 slots? Or a system with 2X1GIG PC2-4200s leaving 2 of the slots open?

The slowest speed memory will be the speed that the rest of the memory runs at. The speed difference would be nothing noticeable and I'm not exactly sure which configuration would be faster.
