Someone told me that going from PC100 to PC133 will not only make your system run cooler it will also help your system overclock faster.

Anyone have any info on this? Real experiences? I have 64MB of PC100 in my KT7/D650 right now. I was just going to add another 64MB of PC100 but now I might just break down and go for 128MB of PC133 if I think it will make my system run a bit faster and a bit cooler. Not so sure about the cooler part. Faster, I think so.

well, your system will run faster at pc133, i've benchmarked my mem at pc100 cas 2 and pc133 cas 3 and even at a higher cas the pc133 was significantly faster under sandra. As far as o/c'n goes, what your friend said holds true for other systems (i.e. - celeron, pIII's), but amd chips these days don't get much fsb results so I wouldn't expect anything extra outta your mem if you were to buy pc133 for o/c'n purposes. As for it running cooler... i can't be certain (no one's ever suggested that to me) but i assume cuz they both run on 3.3 v that you see no decrease/increase in heat. RAM prices being so low it can't hurt to buy a stick of pc133 128mb, try to get cas2. But if you don't want to go that far, i'm selling a stick of kingston 64mb pc100 cas 2

A feature of VIA's chipset allows you to run the memory at FSB + PCI CLOCK. So if you have a chip on a 100 mhz FSB, the PCI CLOCK will be 1/3, or 33mhz. So you can run your memory at 100+33 = 133. In synthetic memory benchmarks like Sandra, the increase in memory speed gives a dramatic benefit in memory bandwidth. If you can get your system to 105 FSB your PCI CLOCK will be 35 and your RAM will run at 140, giving you more bandwidth. I've gotten benchmarks on my awesome Corsair PC133 CAS 2 memory at a FSB or 120 PCI CLOCK of 40, 120+40=160. I almost doubt them, but the Sandra scores are around 550/620.

your ram won't let you overclock your Duron, that's more limited to the actual chip, but it will give you better system performance, so i'd definately suggest it for a duron setup. As for heat, it won't do anything either way.

Tersely, the RAM itself will not affect how far you would be able to OC the Duron. That depends primarily on the chip itslelf. Where the RAM does come in is performance. PC133 would be beneficial to the Duron since it has such a small L2 cache. The PC133 will do a better job making sure the Duron has enough stuff to process.

Fanon, if you go with an abit kt7 RAID or non-RAID board (highly suggested) you don't need to worry about the pci clock. One of the best features of Abit's Softmenu III is the ability to adjust CPU Plus MHz so you can run 105/33, it will always break the pci clk to 33. The memory bandwidth definitely helps. Like i said earlierl, i pull in much higher scores at 133.

xizor, got ya beat :) 114x9.0 = 1026 MHz RAM at host+pci = 147 cas 2... i pulled in ALU = 500 / FPU = 641. Granted it's not stable for more than 45 min. like that :), i keep it at 1000 and pull in like 490/600, can't beat that for $300 :)

I have a KT7 already. I have generic PC100 ram in there now. I get like 360/385 in SiS Sandra's benchmark scores with my 650 clocked at 900. I have all the memory tweaks turned on.

Overall I am pretty pleased. Just wasn't sure about the PC133 adding to overclocking. I have my 650 running at 900 most of the time. Sometimes I crank it up to 950 which is as fast as it will go, but the temp starts creeping up towards 50C. It will lock up in Q3 after a while so I just keep it at 900.

Techwhore, I was wondering what affects the ALU and FPU.

At 8.5 x 117 = 995 and Memory at 117 + 39 = 156 I got 506/622 which is right around your score at 150, I'm guessing yours was higher because of the processor speed. Of course my USB and PCI slots don't work at this speed, but its fun to max out your system.
