im using a voodoo3 right now in my old pc. i know a 3dfx card should be in the list but it probably should have been the voodoo1 or 2. but 3 is good too, its the thought that counts.

It's a nice list but Windows 95 belongs higher up than Doom. It was the first real consumer-friendly OS for the Wintel masses.

windows 3.1 was

Windows 3.1 sucked.

Yes, and Windows 95 was of extremely high quality

EXACTLY

I'd love to see a poll of how many people owned a Voodoo 3, I knew one person... Voodoo 2? everyone and their brother, if you didn't own a Voodoo 2 you were a nobody.

TNT? Yea similar to Voodoo 2, mostly everyone I knew had Voodoo 2/TNT combo cause it was the best of both worlds.

I don't see how they couldn't make the list, and I thought it was the Voodoo 3/5 that lead to the downfall of 3dfx.

Wasn't there a pretty big deal because the Voodoo 3 didn't support 32bit colors in 3d?

The Voodoo 3 was kind of the beginning of the end for 3dfx. Why they didn't put the Voodoo 1 or 2 on that list is beyond me.

Voodoo 3 was the best selling video card ever at its point in time. It was basically the critical mass of 3dfx, and succeeded almost purely on the reputation 3dfx had built up at that point. It's generally regarded as when 3dfx lost its direction too. The best selling video card thing isn't really important, since I'm sure something geforce 2 went on to sell even more shortly thereafter, and if anything be more important as it brought out the standardization of 3d graphics.

In fact, a lot of the things on there don't see to be the true starters or pushers of any idea, but rather the actual representation that the idea was solid and going to stay. Not how lists of the most important anythings are usually made, for instance I'd say everquest or ultima online are infinitely more worthy of being on that list than world of warcraft.

What about the original Voodoo? That was pretty much all there was at the time, and it really shook the industry.

IMO

That would be Wolfenstein. I remember when that came out, and it pretty much set the trend for 1st person 3d gaming. Doom was their follow up to Wolfenstein.

It was a huge user interface improvement. Probably the most significant user interface improvement Windows has ever had. Which is why the interface is still pretty similar.

Perhaps MacOS 6 would have been a better choice (or System 6 as it was called)? ;)

Am I the only person thinking "what a stupid ****** list?"

Damned title doesn't make any sense -- this is a computer-related-tech list, if anything.

Whatever the format, Napster is what made it popular.

Napster would be trying to pass around 50 mb .wav's if it weren't for the format

...the file sharing problem would eventually solve itself, but having a 5 mb file rather than a 50 mb file (back in dial-up times when modems downloaded at 2 mb/hour) is what really drove the music sharing revolution
