PC won't turn on... then will

jiggle it

There was a power surge in my apt a few weeks ago (I have my computer in a surge protector). At the time however, my ethernet card seemed to go out. I thought it was wierd, but I went ahead and bought a new ethernet card. After installing it, the power wouldn't turn on. Even the green light for the ethernet didn't light up. I toyed around for a few minutes and eventually it went on (I didn't really do anything to make it work, it just worked). Once it was on, I realized my original ethernet adaptor (which is attached to the motherboard) was working again.

A few weeks went by without me turning off the computer. Then yesterday I shut her down and once again the power wouldn't work. I toyed around and after about 30 minutes she came back up, but I didnt' really do anything to fix it. Now I am scared that when I turn her off again, she won't come back. Any suggestions as to what can be wrong? Also, I have restarted her without a power down a few times without incident. Thanks

Most likely a psu problem, surge protectors are reletively usless unless you get a very good one. What you needed is a ups. Welcome to the forums, srry about your problem. I can recommend you a few good psus if you like.

Sounds like a PSU problem to me as well. What are your system specs? Just so we all have an idea of what to recommend if you need a PSU (looks to be that way).

When the system was off and wouldn't turn on was the LED on the mobo on or off?

I didn't notice an LED on the mobo, but I haven't noticed it ever. Here are my basic specs

ECS NFORCE4-A754 Socket 754 NVIDIA nForce4 4X ATX AMD Motherboard
SAPPHIRE 100118L-RD Radeon X550 128MB DDR PCI Express x16 Video Card
Kingston ValueRAM 1GB 184-Pin DDR SDRAM DDR 400 (PC 3200) System Memory Model KVR400/1GR
AMD Sempron 64 3000+ Palermo 1.8GHz Socket 754 Processor Model SDA3000BXBOX
Antec LifeStyle SONATA II Piano Black Steel ATX Mid Tower Computer Case 450Watt SmartPower 2.0 ATX 12V V2.0 for AMD & Intel systems Power Supply
Western Digital Caviar SE16 WD2500KS 250GB 7200 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive

Thanks.

I've also got an Antec SP 450 that started acting like your's after a storm.

I can get mine up and going by using a paperclip to short out the green and black wires on the ATX cable.

It's perfectly stable once it's up, just have a hell of a time getting it on without a paperclip.

I e-mailed Antec about it a while back and they said I'd have to RMA it. Their tech support department is pretty decent. I e-mailed them in the morning and had a reply the same day 🙂
