PC won't recognize CDR-W...HELP!!

Running XP Pro on an A7V.
Previously had a CD-ROM installed that was recognized. Installed a Lite-On 32x12x40 that is recognized when I go into the BIOS, but after exiting the BIOS, it doesn't recognize it during detection.
I have it set to "Cable Select" as it's the only device on that cable (secondary channel). I have one hard drive that is hooked up on the primary channel.
Am I doing something wrong?
TIA!!

try setting it as master!

That's what I tried first, since it was the only device on the cable, then I tried cable select to no avail.
It finally recognized it when it was installed as the slave, tho it won't recognize store-bought audio cd's or burnt data cd's.
Ideas?
