Specs:
Skt A Athlon XP 2800+
Gigabyte GA-7N400 Pro2
512MB Kingston HyperX PC3200
ATI Radeon 9600 Pro

History:
This used to be my main rig a while back, and then I gave it to my mom. It has been working fine over the years (other than a couple PSU replacements) and is usually left on most of the time.

Recently, the Cooler Master Aero 7 I had on it wouldn't spin up all the way. It would spin a little, and then stop, and when it did spin it sounded terrible, like a bearing or something was going out.

Finally, the other day, after I used the PC to test a video card and ram from another machine, it was spinning so little that the CPU would overheat and would shut down the computer. Perhaps foolishly, I tried to turn it on a couple times and get the fan spinning, but it would never start spinning long enough to cool the CPU to the point where it would not crash.

This morning I put the stock cooler back on it, but it will not post. I took all the hardware out of it, so it?s just the motherboard and the CPU, and it will power on and spin the fan, but it won't post. I don't even get any error beeps for not having the GPU or RAM in. If I have the HD and CD-ROM plugged in, then they will spin up, but no beeps at all.

I can however, hear a couple pops in the mobo speaker when I turn it on.

The Reason?
Does it look like the CPU and/or motherboard may be dead?

I have a friend who may have some spare skt 939 parts that I can switch in to test, but I won't get them until at least tomorrow.

Any ideas? :(

Is there any chance you may have bent a pin on the CPU when replacing the HSF?

Also, maybe you knocked something else loose, check your connections.
