Hello Everyone,
It looks like im having a RAM issue here.

I am running:
Mobo:GA-Z68X-UD3H-B3 BIOS Ver - F12
CPU: Intel i7 3770k (just upgraded from a i5 2500k
RAM: 2 Kits of KHX1600C9D3K2/8GX to make 16GB - Ram has 1.65v

So i upgraded from the i5 to the i7 last week.
PC wouldnt post, it boots for 3-5 seconds, shuts off then boot loops over and over.
I then upgraded the bios to the F12 version.
Still not posting.

I removed all but 1 stick of ram. PC boots fine.
Installed 2 sticks of ram and pc boots fine.
Install 3 sticks and it wont post.
Install 4 sticks and it wont post.

I have no idea what is wrong.
Any help would be great, im losing my hair on this one!

Thanks

Will it boot with 1 of ANY stick? Also, have all 4 sticks worked with the i5?

Using all 4 banks makes mobos more finicky than using two.

The OS detected 16GB RAM is a overkill and you will never even use 8GB so maybe its acting up.. jk jk

Go to BIOS and manually enter timings and set voltage of RAM one notch higher,, gl

Good question Einstein.... ?

I would like to know too. Maybe he wanted the 4 HT threads so 8 threads. But does he really need 8 thread CPU ? Games dont need it, and you need to use hardcore apps like Sonar , and Premiere and studiomax and autocad to use that HT x64 and make the quad kinda feel like a 8 core..... 30 or 40 percent faster.... with HT on .. avg.

I bet hes a gamer soo ya for games you will not notice a diff cuz there isnt one. CPU is overkill right now...... games just need a decent quad.. you had one, but then blew more money,,,,,

Is Haswell a Nov Dec release ?

Answers:

1. I did not set the Voltage manually. Im not 100% familar with doing this, however i am a tech guy so i can do it. Its currently set to AUTO so i figured that would be best.

2. It will boot with 1 or 2 of any sticks, was using all 4 slots. And yes 16GB worked fine with the i5, this just started with the i7 upgrade. ive change them back and forth and it boots fine with i5 & 4 sticks of ram in.

3. I will post the settings availble in the BIOS, i wanna make sure im changing the right thing.

4. I wanted a faster CPU. Im starting to get more into livestreaming, http://twitch.tv/epictankz and the i7 ivy bridge is a better CPU to use when your doing it all from one PC.

Although i do not want to buy new ram just for this CPU.
Ive seen other people posting that they run 1.65v RAM with this CPU just fine.
Not sure what would be going on with this?

I just called intel to see what they woud say.
They said this CPU does not support ram @ 1.65v, it only supports 1.5v.
And that 1.65 may work with 2 sticks in but its not the specified ram and would be the reason why its not working.

try underclocking the RAM with a lower voltage to see if that helps. Try 10-10-10-30 2T timings @1333Mhz @ 1.5V (I know it sucks, but it's to see if it works). If that works, you could remove the underclock gradualy until it's stable.

It could also be a sign of a weak power supply depending on which i7 3770 you have. The Core i5 2500 is 45 watts while the Core i7 3770, 3770k are 77w. The 3770s is 65w and the 3770t is 45w When the voltages dip because PS or motherboard can't supply the power, it could just quit.

David's suggestion to underclock or actually just undervolt would help. Unplugging periperals off the MB to the bare minimum to get you to boot Windows would help as well.

tonight i upgraded to the latest bios UH1.

I tested 1.5v/1333/9-9-9-24 & 1.6v/1600/9-9-9-27 and no change, it will wont post with 4 sticks in.

Also reading the MOBO manual, it states the Dual Channel Memory Configuration is as follows:

Channel A: DDR3_2, DDR3_4
Channel B: DDR_1, DDR3_3
I cannot get it to work in dual channel mode.

The system will ONLY post with the 2 ram sticks in Channel B: DDR3_1, DDR3_3
Any 2 sticks will work.

If i move them to the Channel A, it will not post.
If i put all 4 sticks in it will not post with the i7 3770k, but it WILL post with the i5 2500k.

Also not sure if its because of the RAM loss, i am now getting very low FPS in games. Compared to when i was running the i5.
Im really lost now, beginning to think buying the i7 was not a good idea!

Have you tried re-fitting the 2500K to see if it will still post with 4 sticks and that CPU?
The reason I ask is, you may have bent a pin on the CPU socket when fitting the 3770K.

The memory controller is integrated in these CPUs, so it it posts with the 2500K, you would have to suspect that the 3770K is faulty.

more like he was lucky 1.65V ever worked with sandy bridge and his luck ran out with ivy bridge

there were plenty of warning to not go above 1.5V with sandy bridge, never should have bought that memory in the first place

The weird thing is if i put the i5 CPU in with all 4 sticks of ram it boots fine.

Ive checked and cannot see any bent pins.

Im thinking i will have to buy new ram today :(

Also if there was a bent pin, can i just bend it back or would the mobo be screwed?

Since i moved to the i7 and less ram (8GB) My FPS in games has dropped massilvly. Compared to when i was running the i5 on 16GB of ram. In its current state there is no way i can livestream.

I find with running WoW @ max graphics and streaming with xsplit i eat up the 8GB pretty fast.

I am also not looking to OC my ram, i just want ram that will work with my motherboard and CPU. And be able to OC my CPU to around 4.5ghz.

Bet there's a bent pin or two in the mb's cpu socket.

If there was a bent pin, wouldnt the same issue happen with the i5?
Also i ran the Intel CPU diagnostics utility on the i7 and it passed.
Shouldnt that fail if there was a bent pin?

Just got off the phone with Gigabyte.
At this point i need to check for bent pins, after that they said to RMA the board.

So you didn't like Intel's answer? If it works with the i5, but not the i7, I doubt it's the board. The memory controller is on the cpu.

To be honest im really confused.
Intel says its because the ram is 1.65.
Gigabyte says the 1.65v ram should work fine.
Tons of other people on the internet say the ram should work fine on 1.65 as they are running it themselves and that intel is just covering their ass.

Firt thing im going to do is check for bent pins, even though i dont think there is any as i am very careful with this stuff.

I may also order new ram, however im going to be screwed if it also does not work.
