I just purchased an External LG BE14NU40 USB 3.0 Blu-ray Drive from ebay for my HP p6813w (links for each product are below). After hooking it up it says in the lower right icon that it cannot detect the device. The drive works perfectly with the blue light flashing and all but cannot get my PC to detect it no matter what USB port I plug it into. Any idea's?

I just plugged an external LG DVD drive into a WIN7 computer without admin rights. Showed up, loaded the driver, and worked fine. It had never been plugged into that computer before.

Interesting it worked because many times it will not.

You could go find if there are drivers for it and install them first.

Interestng you mention it is usb 3.0 as many times plugging a usb 20 in a 3.0 slot will not work until you plug it into a 2.0 slot.

a PCI-E to USB 3.0 adapter would be in such order then.

If that's the case, then I 'll have to cough up more money for this

Are there any tips/advice on how accurate this method may work?

It's things like this that make me lose my faith in external devices

Can you try a different usb cable, or try a different computer?

I currently only have one computer right now, and as for a different USB cable, the port on the Blu-ray drive to plug the cable in is exclusive to the one it came with

I'm going to try the PCI-E USB 3.0 adapter if I can find one at a decent low price. I'm pretty sure that's what it is & not a power problem as the Drive makes sounds when running w/ the light flashing.

If this doesn't work I guess I will have to return it.
