PC wont detect 2nd HDD *update* GOT IT!

GasX

Lifer
My 2nd PC crapped out on me and I want to save files off the HDD before reinstalling Windows. I hooked up my HDD to my primary PC but it wont show up in Windows Explorer. Is that because I have to set it to slave? Since I don't have those little jumper thingies, what can I do?

UPDATE:

I pulled a jumper off a CD drive and set the Maxtor to cable select. The HDDs are all visible now and the CDROM didn't go away. 😀

Thanks to all for their help!

hmmm, lets see what I can find...

Your main drive should be set to Master and the other drive should be Slave. You'll probably need the jumpers though, I imagine you could pick them up at Radioshack or somewhere cheaply.

If you just can't find a jumper, do it like i used to do... bend the pins together until they touch, or get a small piece of wire and wrap it around the two.

It's a temporary solution at least to know if your drive works or not.

Btw, if it's a completely new drive Windows won't usually see it from the Explorer window. Format it first.

will the first not default to master? so if you pulled the jumper off the first and made the second slave i believe it would function correctly

I was just thinking that same thing. I'll let you know!

nope... pulling the jumper off the master did not affect its function, but the other one is still invisible.. 🙁

Am I imagining things, or is Maxtor recommending cable select for the jumper setting nowadays?

Isn't that old school?

I went into the BIOS and my Primary Master and slave were the CDROM and CD/R. My primary HDD was seen as a secondary slave (It's a Maxtor that now has no jumper). I switched the IDE cables and the HDD is now a primary slave. The PC is still not seeing the other HDD (a Western Digital set to slave).

😕

i could be wrong but isnt the default setting with no jumper a single drive?

What OS?

edit - does it detect it in your bios?

I would set your primary hd to master and then the one you yanked out to cable select (if the cable already has a master on it, it will become the slave automatically)

You need to have the HD's on a single cable hooked into IDE1 and your optical drives going into IDE2

WinXP Pro

No

I only have one jumper between the two HDDs

You still haven't mentioned if you've formatted the drive...if you're using Win2K or XP, right-click on My Computer, then Manage, then Disk Management and see if your drive shows up there.

Also check if your BIOS is set to auto detect two drives on the same channel.

Watch your BIOS sequence to see if the other drive appears.
