PC won't both without selecting the boot device

Out of the blue one of my PCs spontaneously reboot and came to the screen that says insert boot media and press any keep. If I enter the boot menu and choose the drive with the OS it boots and everything seems fine. I booted with a DOS boot disk and reset the active partition and also ran fdisk /mbr but it still won't boot without choosing the boot device.

What am I missing here?

Why did it restart ?
Why did the bios settings change ?
I'd check the cmos battery and maybe the PSU then the motherboard.
Did you have any external devices plugged in when this happened ?

I guess it might have just been a surge, but if not it sounds like a hardware issue but there has to be more to this that you're not relating to this, unless it was just a surge.
