PC wont boot?

It gets power, the powersupply shows a green light. After hitting the 'ON' switch it just dies. I can feel the fan start to kick on the powersupply, but it just instantly shuts down.?.

Any ideas? Bad powersupply is what i was thinking, but the fans starts to come on.

Modern systems have a LOT of self-protection in them. If the mobo senses that the PSU voltages are dangerously out of spec or, conversely, if the PSU detects a problem with the mobo it will shut down to prevent further damage.

Bad PSU is the likeliest culprit, but it could also be a bad mobo. Bad capacitors in either one are a prime suspect - lot of that happening lately with any hardware over 1 year old.

Check your mobo caps - compare them to these photos:

Swap out the PSU. Anyone who's a power user should have a spare PSU for testing anyway, so even if the old PSU is good it won't hurt to have a spare on the shelf. Also if the old PSU is more than a year old it's probably not a dual 12v rail model and you're better off with a modern PSU in there.

Hope this helps...

Yes, it was working fine before it was moved to replace carpet.

Its a HP Pavilion 701. AMD 1700 (i think) stock everything, aside from a usb2 pci card.
Im going to stick i extra PS into it and see, but all that stuff is at home.

I sure hope its not the MB. It looks like a green generic p.o.s.

thanks for your input guys.
