pc was working, now nothing

I'm looking at someone's Emachines 370 pc with a Bestec ATX-250-12E power supply. Machine was working fine, they tried to start it up one day and now not a lot happens.

I had an Antec TruePower2.0 380Watt ATX12V psu lying around so I plugged that in and I get a bit of a clicking/buzzing sound but it doesn't power up.

Here's the question - is it worth getting hold of another old psu, possibly lesser spec than the Antec, and trying that? I think it is a psu problem since there's no fans or lights or anything.
 
There could be more and trying to be a nice person could bring a lot of problems.
The cost of a new eMachine rig is so cheap nowadays, dump the 370 and have your friend buy a new one.
 
Thanks. Believe me they can't really afford it at the moment. I've just been to their apartment. If it's not the psu then I'm not going to try fixing it because that would be too troublesome. So I'll try and get hold of another psu I think.
 
If you don't have a spare one laying around, go get a cheap PSU and try that out. Make sure all wires and plugs are secure and where they need to be. Make sure all hardware is set right as well.

Do you know if the Antec is good or not? Have you tried it on another computer?

You could buy a power supply tester, they have a simple on at Compusa for about 12 bucks but it doesn't show over/under voltage, just good or bad. Or you could pick up an Antec PSU tester at Circuit City for about 20 bucks.
 
I don't think the Antec is any good. The caps probably bulged and the PSU died from the start. I suggest buying a different PSU. FSP 350W, should do the trick.
 
It coud possibly be just something plugged in that has died and is preventing anything from receiving power.

I just recently had an issue where my PC was completely dead. No lights or fans, nothing. I tried many differnt things but all it ended being was a bad USB adapter plugged into the MB. As soon as I unhooked it, it started up. I think I actually killed teh adapter vice it just dying, but the point is that just having it connected to the MB prevented anything from getting power, like it shorted everything out or something.

Anyways, simpley uhook everything but the CPU & RAM, (VC if it doesn't have onboard), including all case fans and see if you get any power. Could be something has died and is causing a short.
 
want to test to see if your PSU works? take a paper clip and make a short between the Green wire & any black wire on the main 20/24 pin connector (obviously you have to unplug it from your mobo to do this
