PC Upgrade??

I have bought a new PC every couple of years for the last 10 years or so. I usually manage to double the performance of the old machine in all respects. It is now time to upgrade again but the performance gains do not appear to be there this time.

My PC is an Athlon 2800+, with 512mb ram and a Radion 9800 graphics card. New games seem to run OK at 1280*1024.

I have installed a couple of Athlon 64 3000 based PCs for family and friends and haven't been that impressed.

The performance charts I've seen indicate that I would need to go for somehting like an FX55 with an X800ultra card to really notice the improvement - which is a much bigger investment than I would normally have to make.

Can anyone advise whether or not a total machine upgrade is sensible at this point?; or, would a high level graphics card give much better results compared to the 9800 if I kept my current 2800 machine?

Cheers for any help you can give.

it's not worth it to upgrade with ur specs... i've got athlon xp 2400.. and 9700pro.. and i have no complaints watsoever...
u should prolly wait untill the dual cores are ready for us consumers.. if u feel like u need more game performance.... i'd prolly upgrade the gpu... and add nother 512mb stick.. jus my 2 cent

I have close to the same setup, and personally I'm waiting for next generation of videocards, and probably a dualcore athlon. But I'll wait until autumn.

From the limited system specs you've given...
I'd bump the memory up to 1GB dual channel.

What MB make & model are you running?
Need a faster or larger HD?
Need a DVD burner?
Is your PS up to snuff?
Do you like your monitor?

because a Radeon 9800 is a last generation video card. You should have spent $300 on a x800xl.

Moving to an athlon64 3200+/3400+ from an older athlon XP may help performance, but it wont do alot for games. Uprading the graphics card will help game performance, but a 6800/X800/X850 will be limited by your CPU. Unless you really want to play the latest games, you'll probably be better off waiting 6-12 months. The only upgrade really worth it would be the RAM. If you get 1GB of decent RAM (in dual channel if possible), you may notice the improvement.
