I want to upgrade my Processor, RAM and motherboard
From: AMD Athlon XP 3000+
2x256 TwinMos PC2700 ram
Asus A7N8X deluxe

To: AMD Athlon 64 3500+
2x512 Corsair XMS TwinX 3200XL Platinum
MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum

a)My OS is Win2000, is there any way I can keep my current installtion of my OS
when I upgrade.
When I upgraded to the A7N8X from a Gigabyte GA-7VAXP (KT400 chipset), i
had to reload my computer because of the IDE driver.

b)Also, how is the Stock fan for quietness. I heard at max speed, it makes 48 db, is this true.

c)Is the upper limit for the multiplier locked at 11 (200mhz*11=2200mhz => stock speed of 3500+)

I believe that the 3500+ is upper multiplier locked meaning that if you have a compliant mobo then you can lower the multiplier....but with pci and mem locks why bother!

Zugzwang152's & fuzzynavel's replies pretty much covered it. If the fan is loud you can get an aftermarket one for not too much $$$ if it's that important. All desktop AMD chips have locked multis afaik; at least, on the upper end, but as stated that's what changing the fsb is for ;)

Does any one know if the ASUS A7N8X Deluxe and MSI K8N Neo2 platnium
use the same Hardware abstraction layer

Straight from Microsoft:

Upgrade an Existing Motherboard
This scenario assumes that your existing motherboard works and that you can start the existing Windows installation on the hard disk.

To replace a working motherboard with an updated motherboard and to then reconfigure Windows to work with the new motherboard, follow these steps:
Start Windows, and then log on as an administrator.
Insert your Windows CD in the CD-ROM drive or the DVD-ROM drive, and then let Autorun start.
Do one of the following:
For Windows 2000:
Click Install Windows 2000.
In the Windows 2000 Setup window, click Upgrade to Windows 2000 (Recommended), and then click Next.
Follow the instructions on the screen until the computer begins to restart.
For Windows Server 2003:
Click Install Windows Server 2003.
In the Windows Setup window, click Upgrade (Recommended) in the Installation Type list, and then click Next.
Follow the instructions on the screen until the computer begins to restart.
Just as the computer begins to restart, turn off the computer.
Replace the existing motherboard with the new motherboard.
Turn on the computer, and then allow the upgrade to continue.

Setup installs the HAL, the IDE controller drivers, and any other drivers that the new motherboard must have.
After the upgrade is completed, reinstall any service packs or hotfixes that you had previously installed.

I dunno about MSI mainboards... do as you like, but based on experiences a large number of ATers have had with them, I wouldn't buy one personally.

If I were you I would not upgrade, just get 2x 512 RAM PC3200. You will notice a difference in speed. I suggest you waiting for a newer CPU or the prices to come down. But if you have cash to burn, then go ahead
