I tried with my old motherboard. Plugged in the psu into the motherboard, but with no cpu, ram, cooler, case etc. It did not turn on at all, trying to power it on with a screwdriver did nothing. I'll try with the new motherboard when I have time.

IF you pull the CPU, please post pics of the motherboard socket pins and the back of the CPU.

I still lean towards something shorting/grounding the motherboard to the case. Obviously, it it does this when you do an out-of-case build on non-conductive cardboard...then I'm way off base.

Unfortunately the problem came back. When I connect a power button to the front panel header on the motherboard, the same problem happens (computer turns on and then turns off after a few seconds). When I disconnect the power button and turn the computer on with a screwdriver, the computer works. I'll try again later with a new power button.

If your case has a reset button, you could use that as your power button for testing.
