How can I go about streaming videos, i.e. DivX, AVI, VOB, Mpeg, MP4, from my PC to a television? Can anyone help me find something on the cheap side? I use to use my Xbox, with Xbox Media Center, but the NIC portion of my Xbox fried and now I need an alternative.

Do you have TV-Out from your videocard? If you do, it's as easy as just running a video cable to your TV and if you want audio through your TV / Receiver, you just need an adapter for stereo.

I'm not sure what you mean by streaming if you need more functionality than just using your TV as a monitor basically.

Like I said, I used my Xbox on my network to stream video from my PC to the Xbox Media Center software, the hacked version, and was able to play any video, show any photo, and listen to all my music, that is on my PC, on my TV through the Xbox. I want the same functions, but using an alternative method, as my Xbox is on the fritz.

Sorry, didn't know if your PC was nearby or not. Thought I'd try the cheapest solution first :)

Well, I am planning to build another PC and was thinking of putting the current one next to the TV. The TV I have does not support S-Video so that still won't help. Could I somehow use the coax or even possibly use the Yellow-White-Red inputs (sorry, forgot what these are called LOL)?

That yellow video cord would be composite video. Some videocards will come with an adapter for s-video to composite video so it shouldn't be a problem doing that.

Is that the connection you were using before with your xbox?

Yeah. Why something wrong with that way? I don't know that's why I ask.

At the moment, I have the Xbox hooked up to a VGA monitor via a X2VGA adapter. All the games look great on a higher resolution monitor. I just wish that the NIC portion worked.

Well not really "wrong", but that's basically the lowest quality connection type you can use. If that's all your TV has though, then I guess that's your only choice though.

It makes a big difference for text and detail, but for general video and games then it still looks pretty darn good.

In general
Composite <<< S-video < Component < DVI/HDMI

EDIT: VGA would be right around Component for quality

My PC is about 15-16 feet from the TV. Can I run a S-Video cable that far, and do they even make them that long? Alternatives?

Can S-Video transfer sound also, or is it ONLY video? If it only transfers video, then I will still have a problem sending the sound too.

There has got to be a good, easy way of transferring/streaming video from a PC to a TV, especially with the slight distance factor I have.

My TV only has composite (RCA) and coax.

S-Video is video only. Those "RCA & S-Video Combo Cable" cables would give you s-video and RCA audio at the same time.

If the only inputs you have for something like this are RCA, then a triple RCA cable will give you the connections you need.

Now that would mean I would need to plug in the S-Video into my video card and the RCA audio would go into the soundcard, right? At the other end it will all be RCA (audio & video) and that would plug into the TV.

As I only have integrated audio via the mobo, and I use that for my PC's speakers, do I have another way around getting sound? I do have another soundcard laying around that I could use, but I don't want there to be conflicts with the hardware in my PC.

s video doesn't carry audio.

you would need an s-video to RCA cable, and a 3.5mm to RCA audio cable for sound.

found some s-video to RCA cables here.

audio.

Are there any tuner/video cards that have a coax out? I have only seen coax in, but maybe I haven't looked hard enough.

Yeah, that could work, but it wouldn't stream all the video I would like it to. I have all kinds of video files, ranging from Xvid, DVIX, AVI, MP4, that I would like to be able to play. I really want things to be as they were when my modded Xbox with Xbox Media Center (not the MS version) was working. It played all formats, but it did so by streaming, plus I could resize the picture to whatever size the video was in like 16x9.

yeah, Buffalo makes a device that would play all those formats. D-Link makes a similar device, but it doesn't support Divx.

That Buffalo player is amazing, but alas the price is a bit much. I may just buy that in a few months. Thanks for the link.
