PC to TV, can see everything except videos - huh?

Card: evga 7900GT KO w dual DVI out
Monitor 1: Acer AL1917LCD (connected via DVI)
TV: Panasonic 53x54 (rear projection CRT)

Ran a DVI-HDMI cable from the back of the computer to the HDMI in on the TV.

Everything displays fine (well enough for a CRT anyway that isn't fixed pixels) except videos. Regardless of the software used to play, it just a black box. Everything else looks fine, desktop, time monitor in the software, just there ain't no movin' pictures.

This some sort of HDCP issue? Not playing any restricted or DRM content.

What am I missing?

FWIW it's a cloned display, and can see things fine on my monitor, just the tv no play the video

:] Pretty common problem with most dual screen users. Just have to adjust the full screen video options so it can use the secondary monitor for video.

I'm running Forceware version 97.44, but don't see those exact options, and none of the settings really seem to matter.

I support triple and quad workstations at work so I ain't a n00b, but I'm a bit perplexed.

On the LCD I see Media Player going and the video
On the tv just the Media Player, no video

Yup like I said it's just a problem with clone. I've seen this problem dozens of times, change the Full Screen Video options .

EDIT: 97.44? Uhh according to nvidia those only support 8800gts and 8800gtx and came out in december. Are you using XP? Use 94.24...

It's a copy protect feature and it would happen on any video card you bought. Video, at least in media player, will not show on two screens at the same time. You either have to set your tv as the primary monitor or not use clone mode for dual display.

I figured as much. Dumb.

I mean I could just as easily set up VNC and log into myself and make it work. Or use Orb to steam to myself. Not something that is difficult to defeat.

I don't guess with a tv there is a way to set it as a secondary monitor? I've never had the problem before, but the TV just seems to be set for "clone, span horizontal/vertical" and doesn't show up like a second screen like I'm used to.

It's not a copy protection feature, it's simply inherent to the technology. Overlay happens on your video card. What happens is, the media player prints a key color (which is black or usually purple) and the video card itself replaces that key color with the video as it goes out one port. It doesn't automatically do it for the other port, though.

You should use the VMR9 (video mixing renderer 9) option for your media player. VLC can do that using the "directx" option I think, or maybe OpenGL will work. I know one of them does VMR9 just fine. WMP will do it (it's called "high quality mode"), Media Player Classic will definitely do it. Zoom Player will do it, Nero ShowTime should also, and GOM Player will definitely.

I really wanted to say it was something to do with the overlay, but figured if I was wrong would sound too stupid for trying to pretend like I knew what I was talking about.

That fixed it though, I should have been able to figure it out last night, bah!

ATI drivers have an option, to show overlay data on the primary surface only, or on both displays when in clone mode, or as a full-screen display on the secondary, while playing in a window on the primary.
