PC to PS3 DLNA streaming

Hello,

I have DLNA working via J. River Media Center 17 from my PC to the PS3. Works like a charm, no problems whatsoever. I also tried out Tversity just for fun, and that works as well. If neither of those servers are on, my PS3 always finds my Win7 64-bit via the Windows Media center. So I decided I would configure that as well, just in case I forgot to turn either of the other 2 options on.

I ran through the setup, and it works as well, with one major caveat. When I select the icon on the PS3, it finds all the correct folders on my PC as setup in WMP 11. I navigate down to any AVI I want to watch, launch it, and the PS3 screen turns black. I have waited 15 mins before just to see if it would ever start, but it never does. I have to hold down the PS3 off button to shut it down, and when I restart it, it has to do the file system check. When that is done, I do exactly the same thing again, and this time it works. I have repeated this experiment many times, it is always the first access which hangs my PS3, and the second one which succeeds. I know it is going to hang when the PS3 hourglass disappears from the upper-right and doesn't come back. When it works, it pops up for about a second, flashes off, and comes back for another second before the video starts. When it hangs, it pops up and disappears.

I can't explain it. It always works on the second try, so I am pretty sure it is configured correctly. The other 2 DLNA servers both work flawlessly, so I am pretty sure my PC is configured correctly. Any ideas what could be causing this hiccup?

- Win 7 64-bit Ultimate
- Wired 100-Mb Ethernet connection via Asus gigabit switch behind the TV, which in turn connects via a wired connection to my Bell router/switch in the basement.
- IP address of PC and PS3 in same subnet.
- PS3 and PC up to date with latest updates.

Thanks,
BM.

Thanks,

TVersity transcodes, likely the PS3 doesn't like the codec for the files that go black and sit there. After a lot of messing around I found TVersity to generally work "the best." The PS3 Media server app has the potential to work better (it uses the same FFMPEG trancoding as TVersity) because it lets you mux in subtitles and the like from MKV.

Odds are this isn't really networking, DLNA is cool but you still have to deal with codec support.

Yeah, except the exact same avi file starts after a PS3 restart. And this only happens when using the Windows DLNA server in WMP. All videos have the same problem, if I start one of them using WMP on the PS3, it hangs. Reboot PS3, it works. Use the same video with TVersity or J.River MC17, works first time.

For now, if I don't see the MC17 icon in the PS3, I get and go to the basement to start it. Then the vid won't hang.

To troubleshoot this problem, is there anywhere on the PS3 it stores logs or traces from connections attempts? Maybe I can find some clues in that file.

BM.
