PC starts up for a few seconds & then shut down

Hi,
I'm looking at a Gateway System that has a p3 1 gig cpu, 128 megs of PC133 ram with onboard video. The issue is that the system will power up for a few second and then shutdown. I have taken all the pci cards out (sound, nic, etc), just leaving the memory, cpu and video. I even attempted to use different ram and a pci video card. Unfortunately I am not getting any beep codes and I am having difficulty finding out what the motherboard is. I even used another HSF to test. I don't have a different cpu to test the board in to see if the CPU is the culprit. Any suggestions? In the meantime I will try to figure out what model the motherboard is. All help is welcomed. Thanks.

Also tried new PSU. Same results.

Perhaps the case's electrical power switch is stuck in the "pressed" position. If it fires up immediately when you plug it into the wall, and then shuts down, that may be the problem. The motherboard sees the switch apparently being held down, and that's its signal to turn off.

Need to get a special screwdriver to get the other side of the case off to take the front off. Will update once I get the screwdriver.

Got the "torx" screwdriver. Yeah I never had a need for one so it was a learning experience. Same deal with the mobo though. Took it out of the case and it does the same thing. Looks like it powers up, keyboard flashes, fans run, tried to start up the monitor and then shuts down. I'm guessing it has to be the mobo or cpu that is the problem. I don't have another P3 1 gig CPU to test though. You guys have any other suggestions?

Try spraying WD-40 spray on the power switch, you don't need to open it up. WD-40 absorbs dust, water and rust and also lubricates, and keeps those contacts clean.

Have you cleared the BIOS and set it back to default?

No, I'll give that a shot tonight when I get home. It's a Gateway model so I have to get some info on the mobo.

Negative on the PSU. I tried it with a new PSU and it does the same thing. Begins to boot, then shuts down.
