PC speaker (z560) placement?

I have a set of z560's and am almost motivated enough to hook up my rear surrounds to see the difference while gaming. The only reason I haven't done so thus far is because the closest place I could mount them is about 8 feet behind my puter desk on the wall or ceiling. I think maybe I'll just set them on something first to see how they sound before I go mounting stuff on my apartment walls (which isn't a big deal, just not worth doing if the sound isn't awesome). I WISH my computer area was a perfect 8x8 square room, sound would be fantastic

Anyway, right now I have the front speakers directly on either side of my monitor (1800FP) but was wondering if it might be a better strategy to space them out further, at the edges of my desk? (about 2 feet out on either side).

Any comments/opinions/ideas?

Sound is better in a round room, remember that ;). I have my front Z560 speakers about 3 inches from each side. The rears are just on the floor for now (Horrible because the sound is below the level of hearing, but oh well.)

I'm wondering if moving the front speakers out a bit will increase stereo separation, if that's what it's called. I am hoping to get a better pinpoint on direction of sound while playing BF1942/Desert Combat without having to resort to headphones and figure 4 speakers placed apart might help. Plus that way the neighbors can feel like they're playing too, haha.

I got my two rear with the originals... i'm running two jbl's in place of the front... sounds better with them than the regular satellites.... these jbl's are 1'x2'x1' so they are a good size. Matched it with an audigy 2 and latest algorithm mp3 decoder and you are setted.

Someone, correct me if my physics is wrong, but you definatley do not want a perfect square for a room. The disruptive interference would wreak havoc on the sound. Most likley creating many "dead" spaces, as well as generally creating a bad sound.

I think you're right, and I see your point. I guess I was trying to get at the dimensions of the room (square footage) more so than shape, but didn't really get that across very well.
