PC Speaker beeps instead of Windows sounds

it just started today... my computer would play all the alert sounds from windows through the pc speaker instead of the .wav files themselves. everything else seems fine though. checked sound properties, tested all the .wav files and they all work, yet it comes through the pc speaker. any ideas?
 
Go into control panel -> sounds and audio devices -> audio tab. What is the "Default device" listed under Sound playback?
