PC simply won't request DHCP (or can't see it)

Fresh install

I am trying to get this laptop connected to my cable modem.
The cable modem and cable work fine w/ my desktop.

I tried 2 different PCMCIA ehternet cards.
They install fine, all the lights are there,
but when I do ipconfig /release /renew, it can't see the DHCP
The proper connection isn't being made...

I also tried to connnect the cable modem as a USB device
Same thing.
It gets some default 196.xxx.xxx.xxx IP address (Not from DHCP)

I also reinstalled the TCP/IP stuff.

Any clues?

Are you connecting the modem straight to the laptop(using your isps dhcp), or are you using a router at home(using the routers builting dhcp). Can you ping yourself? 127.0.0.1

Sometimes, Microsoft's DHCP renew request doesn't work properly with some devices. In those cases, a DHCP lease can only be aquired when the computer boots up.

You can trick your network adapter, though, by disabling it and then reenabling it. It then may get a new lease.

also many times broadband providers will only use one MAC address (the hard "burned in" address of your desktop)

Maybe call your provider?

Fiveoooh, No router. Ethernet cable directly from cable modem into my laptop

toejam, No, rebooting doesn't fix this.
I have disabeld/enabled the NIC as well.

spidey, the cable provider couldnt fix this. They told me about release/renew..
