PC shuts off when I even think of touching the heatsink

Ok, not exactly but that's the only way I can describe it. I've been seeing how far I can push my e7200. I got it to 3Ghz, ran a bunch of games and programs and it seemed stable. I am using a tuniq tower, so I went to touch it (after grounding myself of course) to see if it was warm. The moment the tip of my finger touched the heatsink, my PC restarted. Thinking it was a coincidence and that maybe the overclock was unstable, I tried it again and the moment I touched the heatsink, it restarted again.

The reason this worries me is because my PC is on its side right now. I recently removed the stock heatsink after buying the TT used, and the padding on the backplate is gone and it doesn't seem snug enough to hold it if it were rightside up. Am I moving the heatsink a little which sets off some protection fault? Is there anything I can use to replace the stuff on the backplate to hold everything on tight?

Somewhat related question! My CPU's default voltage appears to be 1.33v. Is that normal for a 45nm? Did I get a shitty chip? It seems really high, but it's what everything reports.

I've got to ask...

Why are you touching anything inside the case with your computer on? That sounds like an invitation to trouble to me.. :)

Never had any problems before. Touching a piece of aluminum shouldn't cause problems if you're not a retard who doesn't know how to ground their self.

I did it because I don't trust the temp sensors on this board. I wanted to make sure it was making good contact with the heatspreader.

and the padding on the backplate is gone...

Most backplate "padding" also acts as insulation so the backplate doesn't short the contacts on the back of the motherboard. I don't own a Tuniq so I don't know what material the backplate is made of, but if steel it may be shorting. You could cut some thick plastic packaging into an "X" shape and put that in between the backplate and mobo.

p.s. that default voltage is a bit high, but not outside of spec (0.85V – 1.3625V). Try decreasing voltage at stock speeds, can probably get away with 1.27v or lower. Also flash mobo BIOS to most recent if you haven't already.

I touch the heatsink all the time while the computer is running. But I am surprised I still have any fingers left to be honest with you...

It sounds like your computer has a wacky ground. I would take the mobo out and see if any part of it is touching anything that would be a ground. Especially check the backplate area where your heatsink goes.
