Hey guys,

I built a computer 2 years ago, I have the antec Sonata II case with the Antec 450W Power Supply.

About 6 months ago, I went to turn my system on, and after about 10 minutes, it powers itself off. Obviously I'm assuming this is an overheating problem. I've been traveling and out of the country on and off, so I haven't even LOOKED at the system since then. Today, I finally pulled it downstairs, popped it open, and took a look around. I noticed that the fan on the back of my power supply IS NOT SPINNING! Air is coming out (weakly), probably forced through from the fan facing the inside of the case on the PS.

I have read all over the net of multiple issues with this case and the power supply that came with it. I'm extremely tight on funds right now, so I want to make sure the power supply is the overheating issue, and not something else (maybe my processor?). A friend of mine has another power supply that I swapped in and out, and the same thing happened...but BOTH power supplies are Antec 450W PS's, neither of which the back fan spun on. Is that supposed to be spinning constantly? or do we have two faulty power supplies? If its not the power, it must be the processor, right?

If that back fan on my PS doesn't spin at ALL, what are the chances in your opinion that the power supply is the issue? I figure the supply is a timebomb anyways even if it ISN'T the problem at the moment, and it'll have to be replaced eventually...I'm just trying to figure out what the heck the problem so I can get this computer up and running!

On a related note, eventually I will have to pick up a new PS...whether its tomorrow or a month from now (if it turns out something else is the problem), I'm leaning towards a PC Power & Cooling 500W model. good call?

Thanks for any advice you guys have! Love this site, love this forum.

For those PSUs with capacitors that absolutely HATE any sort of heat at all, a fan that won't spin is a VERY VERY bad thing.

If you have a case fan you can spare a moment tie it to the outside of the PSU (or underside if that's where it is stock) and ziptie/ducktape it there. Run your system and see if it runs longer then.
