PC shuts down or restarts when booting into XP

I would normally think it's because I recently installed SP2 RC2, but when it does the same thing while booting from the setup CD or entering safe mode you get kind of worried. Clocking the CPU back to default changes nothing; it can idle in the BIOS all day, but when I try to load anything Windows related it shuts down or restarts at random.

The only change I have made to the once stable machine is installing SP2.

Thanks for any help.

I have all thermal controls disabled. Could it be the BIOS? I'm using Preacher (NF7-S v2), and it has always been whacky in temperature reporting.

EDIT: Fleh. I knew it was goingto be one of those days when I stepped on and broke my remote this morning. I was doing fan comparisons earlier and forgot to re-connect the HS fan's RPM monitor wire when "Shutdown when CPU fan fail" was enabled.

Works now. 😱

Thanks.

Can you get it up long enough to check windows update for patches to SP2 ? It sure could be a virus.

mine was doing this too. just had to take off the fan from the CPU and clear all the dust out of the HS (it was packed). not saying this is the cause, but it was for me and its worth a look.
