PC shuts down after introduction of additional RAM

Asus P5B Deluxe LGA 775 Motherboard
2 GB Kingston DDR2 667 SDRAM (2 x 1GB)
Intel Core 2 Duo E6400 CPU
Foxconn GeForce 7900GS 256MB PCI Express Video Card
Windows Vista Ultimate

As configured, the PC would boot and function normally. The initial build required a BIOS update to alleviate a ?CPU stepping? error.

About 2 months after the original build, I purchased and installed 2 additional SDRAM sticks identical to the original 2 sticks. On boot, the BIOS would recognize 3 GB of the total 4 GB installed. Vista would boot and function normally, and would recognize the 3 GB of RAM the BIOS could see. I was not sure if perhaps one of the sticks was defective, so I removed the 2 new sticks and swapped the slots. The PC reported the same amount of memory, and behaved the same.

After about of day of running in this configuration, I noted CPU utilization seemed to be higher than it should be, frequently running at 50% or more, on both cores. While unRARing a large file, the CPU was maxed out for quite some time, then the system shut down. Upon power up, I got a CPU OverTemp error during POST, but was able to boot up, and logon. Another attempt to unRAR the file produced another shutdown. I got another ?CPU OverTemp? error and looked at the CPU temp in the BIOS, and noted it was running around 100°. I continued the boot cycle and logged on. I left the PC running overnight, and was still running when I got the next morning. I used the PC for checking mail and some light surfing for about 10 minutes before it shut down again. After powering back up, I used the Asus provided utility to examine CPU utilization and core temp. As I watched, I could see the core temp go from about 100° up to about 106° in the space of about 10 seconds. Once it hit 106°, the system shut down again. At this point, I completely removed the new RAM and powered back up. The PC shut down a few seconds after entering my password on 2 consecutive boot attempts.

Sounds like the RAM is a red herring here.

Re-thermal paste and Remount your heatsink. Be sure the fan is spinning at full speed when you are done.

I would flash the bios to the newest if you haven't already as well as redo the heatsink like Smilin said. I have a P5B deluxe Wi-Fi edition and I know that they did have done a ton of bios updates since I got it last August. That might take care of the RAM thing for you.
