Hi guys.
Just some help please.

What part of a PC is the likely cause of a system running very sluggish?

I have this PC and it used to work perfectly. In the last 2 months I have had to reinstall everything about 5 times- it just freezes randomly, and when I log in it will freeze (not fully, like I can move the mouse and stuff but it doesnt do anything).

I know they all sound like software issues but it has been reinstalled many times (off the network with virus and firewall. Im sure its not the software being installed as I use the same copies on other PC's.

I have ran memtest and everything came back fine.

Its a Asus M2N MX SE PLUS board.

Any ideas?

Cheers

Virus?
Spyware?
Molasses in the bits?

As said- i have reinstalled windows 5 times.

Ran memtest and it was fine. Havn't tested the HDD- what tool would I use for that?

Pretty sure its not viruses or anything- have installed an identical PC off the network and works fine but this one doesnt so im fairly sure its not really a software problem- although the symptoms feel like a software problem.....

Post a list of specifically what components you have (all model numbers), and we'll do an online diagnosis of your problem.

Sounds like a dying HDD.

Find your manufacturer's diagnostic & run it for your HDD.

why repeat after the 2nd/3rd time? why did you expect doing the same thing would have a different result? computers don't work for good reason, they don't get better. this is a legit versionof windows right? i'd say it was your harddrive. but if it was that dodgy a drive i'd be surprised if windows finished installing since its finicky about any dubious drives and freaks out if a drive stalls during installation.

Yes its a legal copy.

Well it happened over a couple of months- and I know the person who uses that computer is not the best at computers and I wouldnt put it past her to accidently download a virus or anything that would cause the system to have problems- but havint seen it happen first hand without having to even get on the internet makes me think its not just software

They are seagate HDD's so I will try some diagnostics on the HDD and see how I go

Have you tried safe mode without networking? Safe mode with networking?
have installed an identical PC off the network and works fine but this one doesnt
Have you tried swapping hard drives from the good PC to the bad PC?
