PC Runs great for two-three minutes, crap the next...

I figured I'd create a new one, since I realized it's not WoW related.
Basically, as it stands, on a cold boot, my PC will run any game totally awesome. Seeing as much as 110+FPS in areas of Episode 1 and the lowest of 35FPS. After running like that for a minute or two, all of a sudden it takes a dump and frames drop through the floor. Areas where I was getting a low of 35, I'm now getting high single digits, etc. It carries through to all other places as well. In addition, it effects ALL games and not just any single one.

I'm not understanding why my PC is doing this, but it's frustrating the hell out of me, as it's obvious my PC has good potential, but something is dragging it down. It's been doing this for a while now and still does even after a fresh reformat.

Ideas?

Athlon X2 4200
GeForce 6800GS
1gig 333MHZ ram (Blah)
7200RPM HD

See if your card is throttling. Open up the nv control panel so you can see the temps and then run some rthdribl. Drag the window open as much as you can but so that you can still see your temps and let it run for 15-20 minutes. You can see the FPS in rthdribl.

My full specs
400W PSU (Fortron)
1gig of ram (three sticks, two 256meg 333MHZ and one 512meg 400MHZ)
Two HD's 80gig, one standard, one 7200RPM SATA HD
GeForce 6800GS
Athlon Dual Core 4200+
Abit KN8 SLI mobo
CD-RW drive
DVD-RW drive

I ran that demo and monitered temps, it's been running for about 15 minutes now and the GPU peaked at 90* but is now down to 87* and my CPU stayed consistant at 39/40*

You didn't see any drops in FPS when it was ~90c? Thats usually when the nv cards start throttling back. My buddies 6600gt did that alot. Same exact symptoms as you- gams only and drastic sudden drops in FPS.

The whole entire demo (forgot to mention how it ran) ran right around 25FPS the entire thing. It would occasionally hit 30-32, but it was pretty consistant at 25 without any drops as temp increased.

25-30fps is way low for that card. Was your card cool when you started it?

edit- Do you have riva tuner? That can monitor and log your core clock and temp. Maybe start up a game and once the FPS drop again, check the log.

Yes the card was cool and I extended the demo to match my desktop size of 1280x1024.

Interesting thing though, I did a windows hotfix for my dual core processor, because a friend was mentioned that that could cause me problems. So, I installed that, got it all worked out and now WoW runs very well. Consistant 60FPS with all features on at 1280x1024. I also tried Half-Life 2 and it ran very well as well. A lot better than it's previous dipping into the single digits and highs of 30. I also downloaded Rivaturner and monitered temps/speeds and the speed was consistant, it stayed at the GPU's clock speed and in addition, the hottest the core was, was 88*C as well, it never saw a drastic drop in FPS as it had before.

Perhaps it was just my dual core problem. I had installed a fix for it before, but the latest one seemed to have helped a lot.

At full screen size, I'm still getting 25-30FPS in the demo previously mentioned. Still too low? 1280x1024?

Well at 12x10, perhaps not. I've never run it that high.

So it was your dual core patch, interesting. At least its fixed 😉
