PC reverted to 6 months ago

I'm at work so I don't have my wife's pc in front of me, but she emailed me this morning saying that she was on it this morning when she got a BSOD and when it rebooted back the computer reverted to how it was back in December. She had a ton of photos that she just transfered onto her desktop a week or two ago and they are currently gone.

I suggested she try system restore but she said even though the dates are "there", they are un-selectable (but not greyed out).

Any ideas?

First priority would be to locate and back up any important files. Don't worry about anything else at this point. Has she tried a "Search" (include hidden and system files in the search)?

If the files are still missing, I'd try one of the commercial data recovery programs. I own those by:
http://dtidata.com
http://runtime.org
If they find her files, then you'll need to pay for the software to recover them.

Before event trying to do a data recovery, if you have another computer you can use, try and slave the drive into it. You might find the foto's when you unhide your hidden files.

Try Techs' suggestion. Such a reversion is usually replacement of the registry with an older copy. The files should still be there. It is just that the current registry was created 6 months ago and doesn't show them. It is important not to write anything until you have a chance to explore that drive as an add-on - external case, slave, or additional SATA.

Thanks for the suggestions. I'll pop that drive onto my regular pc and see if I can find them.

I was already able to recover some of the photos by using some recovery software on the camera's card

Mission accomplished. I hooked it up as a slave just now and am grabbing the rest of the pictures from her hard drive. Thanks for the great advice!
