My PC:
Athlon XP3200
ASUS A7n8x-E deluxe mobo
Connect3d 9800 pro
120 gig Maxtor
1 gb (2x512) Crucial PC3200
NEC 3500a - dvd burner
LG 17' LCD
400w PSU - came with case

My Problem:
First, I upgraded my CPU from XP2500 to XP3200. After that, I was getting the BSOD (blue screen of death) with different errors each time. I reformatted my PC and I no longer get the BSOD BUT my full screen games crash randomly and the PC just restarts randomly... it almost has to be a hardware problem but I don't know what it is.

Other random info:
* CPU Temp is usually around 50 Celsius
* I have received a VPU error saying something went wrong with communication with my video card and it went into software mode

PLEASE HELP!!!

Email me phefel@gmail.com

I'm desperate for help... it's driving me nuts....

THANK YOU FOR ATLEAST CHECKING THE THREAD OUT

lets think... you replaced the processor and the computer doesn't work like it used to. You... replaced the processor... and it doesn't work.

Bad processor?

did the problems start right after the installation of the new cpu, or was it working fine for a while?

My first guess is that your PS is the culprit. A lot of "came with the case" power supplies tend to be overrated underperformers.

Another idea - anything else done besides the processor upgrade?

I'm running an AMD 2600 mobile at 3200 speed, ATI 9800 pro, gig RAM, and had reoccurring reboots when running UT2004. Prob turned out to be the ATI driver. Rolled back to 4.9 and all is great. 4.10-12, 5.1, 5.2s messed around with anything running on the Unreal2 engine. All other games were OK.

Temperature ruled out
Last night I put a fan blowing cold air from outside into my case. It dropped the Socket temp to 34C and the case temp to 9C which are awesome temps, but to no avail.

I ran the sandra program and it gave me warnings saying that my CPU fan was not spinning fast enough - 962 Rpm. It looks to be moving fast enough by looking into the case. I had a few other errors that I can't remember (im on my laptop in class not the ill desktop)

Thank you for your help,

More problems...

My PC still automatically Reboots, mostly while playing full-screen games. Last night when I tried to put in the mobo cd, my dvd burner will no longer open. I switched the power connecter but that didn't work.

Also, sometimes after auto reboot... the pc will get stuck at the "Mobo" screen and will NOT post or allow me to get into Bios. If I cut total power to the machine and wait a couple hours, the pc will turn back on...

Some recent errors:
C:\DOCUME~1\Phil\LOCALS~1\Temp\WER6a91.dir00\Mini040205-01.dmp
C:\DOCUME~1\Phil\LOCALS~1\Temp\WER6a91.dir00\sysdata.xml

and

C:\DOCUME~1\Phil\LOCALS~1\Temp\WER6bf4.dir00\svchost.exe.mdmp
C:\DOCUME~1\Phil\LOCALS~1\Temp\WER6bf4.dir00\appcompat.txt

------

Sandra finds that my Vcore is set too high for the CPU BUT I manually set it at 1.65 which is what it is supposed to be set at. My system information shows my XP3200 (400 fsb) running at stock performance --> 2.21 ghz. Sandra also finds other errors such as my CPU fan not spinning fast enough (looks like it is) and it says that the mainboard temp is 181 degrees F... (bad reading?)

is the PSU, CPU, or the MOBO junk???

THank you for your help!

First off, those PSU's that general come with cases are crap, what brand is it? If it's some generic you'd want to replace that reguardless if that's causing the issue or not.

Secondly, are you able to do a fresh/clean install of your OS? And I mean formatting the drive, reinstalling the newest drivers and such.

Third, when you switched out CPUs, did you change your HSF as well? If so to what? Also did you use the thermal pad that comes with a retail CPU or did you use an aftermarket thermal compound?

the PSU is a Rosewill 400 watt

Yes, my windows was a clean install... my HD was reformatted and I got most if not all new drivers...

I updated my Bios and cleared the Cmos after I installed my new CPU... Also, I bought the CPU retail so I'm using the heat sync it came with... and I used Arctic Silver 5.

Idle:
+12V = 12.864
+5V = 4.896
+3.3V = 3.2
Vcore = 1.696

Gaming:
+12V = 13.056
+5V = 4.923
+3.3V = 3.184
Vcore = 1.664

CPU = 58C
MOBO = 25C

hard to get the volts because it freezes then crashes... (the computer stays running, unfunctional, and it cuts video feed to my lcd -- lcd goes into "power save" mode)

IF you are able to get back into the BIOS up your Vdimm a bit.

Are you running 2 sticks?

2.5v?

Just bring it to 2.7V I have ran into issues with multiple sticks sometimes.

Even though that PSU is an off brand ( Rails probably equivalent to solid 300w ) should be enough for that system.

I've tried it with one stick before to no avail

Try reseating the CPU. What did you use for paste? This sounds like PSU or CPU not seated properly.

I had this problem, spent like a whole 4 months trying to fix it =) :
Link 1
Link 2
You have quite a bit of reading to do!
It was the CPU, in the end, but before you RMA the CPU you might want to try the other stuff mentioned in those topics. Link 1 is mostly the Random Rebooting stuff Link 2 might have some stuff about it, but it's mostly other problems i've had.
Feel free to PM me if you have any questions.

Did you install the latest chipset drivers for your system? Do you have the latest BIOS for your motherboard?

There's a setting in System part of control panel where you can set it to not automatically restart after it locks up. I would set that and see if you get a blue screen next time instead of restart.

I doubt it's your PS. 400w rosewill is a decent supply. I bet your CPU isn't 100% stable, or it's too much for your motherboard. Some mobos don't like 400mhz FSB.

Just a follow-up... I think it ended up being my RAM... I finally got my hands on some different RAM and now it runs flawlessly... or as flawless as 1 stick of 256mb PC2100 can run... YAY...

The biggest change when upgrading was moving from 333fsb to 400fsb, so probably try to underclock back to 333fsb for a while & see what happens. Maybe the memory can't handle those speeds properly.
