PC recommendation for a VPN server?

I'm going to China for a period of time and I have a residence in the US with an active internet connection.

What's the cheapest PC I could get that would work for this? I'm guessing any old laptop would work. Perhaps an Intel Compute Stick with the Atom processor?

Anyone want to donate some old unwanted hardware or want to sell me theirs?

depends what sort of throughput you're looking for.
If you want gigabit performance you'll be spending a good chunk of change.

If you're just looking for 100mbps or less, you have a ton of options.

From what i've seen the raspberry Pi VPN servers tend to max out around 15-20mbps throughput. Fine for light use, but you wont see 50-100mbps using that.

I use the VPN built into my asus router. It works. I've never tested the throughput though. Very simple and reliable though.

I would think if I were going to be halfway around the globe, I would want something dead simple on the other end and very easy for someone else to reset by plugging and unplugging.
