I get the exact same problem (Win2K on an Athlon XP 1800+ box). The official bittorrent site mentions the problem but only has the following advice in their FAQ:

BitTorrent makes my machine blue screen! What should I do?

If you have a DSL modem, especially an Alcatel, you should upgrade your drivers. If you have a Linksys network card, you may have to upgrade your network card drivers as well.

My machine also has a linux partition, on which bittorrent (theshadow client) works just fine. I also have an iMac, on which bittorrent is perfectly stable as well.
